As Hollywood heavyweights embrace the Method, almost to the point of destroying it, actors and directors continue to search for the way to make everything in their films more realistic. From real combat to unsimulated sex scenes.

The YouTube channel Top Trending has compiled a list of real-life sex scenes. Robert Pattinson, Marlon Brando and Shia LaBeouf have all featured. And their anecdotes are not to be missed.

1. Lie with Me (Clément Virgo, 2005)

This indie film depicts the frenetic love life of Leila (Lauren Lee Smith) through a series of utterly authentic sex scenes between her and David (Eric Balfour). One especially memorable moment features Lee Smith masturbating in the middle of a public park.

2. The Brown Bunny (Vincent Gallo, 2003)

This debuted in Cannes in 2003 and went on to generate great controversy for its inclusion of a real – and extremely explicit – scene in which Chloë Sevigny fellates co-star Vincent Gallo, who also directed the film. Gallo later confessed that he’d been so obsessed with the actress that he’d invented the character for the express reason of filming that scene.

3. Nymphomaniac (Lars von Trier, 2013)

Lars von Trier’s most controversial film (which is saying something) caused quite a stir for its sex scenes. At first the actors explained that the steamy liaisons depicted between Shia LaBeouf and Stacy Martin were performed by porn doubles. However LaBeouf later claimed that they were all real. Who’s telling the truth?

4. Love (Gaspar Noé, 2015)

Love was classed by most cinemas as pornographic. This seems reasonable for a film that includes several explicit sex scenes, including an ejaculation on camera. And as if that wasn’t enough, Noé filmed it in 3D.

5. Little Ashes (Paul Morrison, 2008)

Shortly before entering the fantasies of millions of teenage girls in his role as Edward Cullen, Robert Pattinson played Salvador Dalí in a film about the great Catalan artist’s relationship with poet Federico García Lorca. In one scene, Pattinson actually masturbates on camera. “Faking it just doesn’t work,” he said, “so I pleasured myself in front of the camera. My orgasm face is recorded for eternity.”

6. Dogtooth (Yorgos Lanthimos, 2009)

One of the most talked about Greek films of recent times depicts a highly explicit incestuous sex scene between Aggeliki Papoulia and Mary Tsoni. Game of Thrones is child play alongside the cunnilingus in this film.

7. 9 Songs (Michael Winterbottom, 2004)

With no script, and all its dialogue improvised by the two protagonists, this film surveys the relationship of Lisa (Margo Stilley) and Matt (Kieran O'Brien) through their sexual encounters. The story is interspersed with flashbacks to explicit and unsimulated sex scenes.

8. Don’t Look Now (Nicolas Roeg, 1973)

Controversy engulfed this movie when it was released due to its powerful and authentic-seeming sex scene between Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland. Rumours suggesting that they really did make love on film seem recently to have been confirmed by Christie.

9. Last Tango in Paris (Bernardo Bertolucci, 1972)

This is one of the most polemical real-sex incidents in the history of cinema. In one scene, Marlon Brando essentially appears to rape Maria Schneider using butter as a lubricant. It later emerged that the scene wasn’t in the original script, and that Schneider was so upset that she cried real tears while they were filming it.

10. The Centre of the World (Wayne Wang, 2001)

This film contains one of the most surprising and erotic scenes in recent indie cinema. Protagonist (Peter Sarsgaard) goes to a strip club where the performer, played by Molly Parker, inserts a lollipop into her vagina before placing it in Sarsgaard’s mouth.
