A win for gender equality, but some fans aren't happy...
The BBC has revealed in a historic move that the next lead in Doctor Who will be a woman, after casting Jodie Whittaker as the first female Time Lord in the show’s next series.
There has been intense speculation about who would step in as the science-fiction legend since Peter Capaldi announced he was leaving the programme in January.
And the big reveal is dividing opinion.
For the bonafide Doctor Who fans, this change of pace is bound to rustle some feathers. The time-travelling icon has been played by 12 previous actors, who have all been male. Whittaker, best-known for playing Beth Latimer in ITV’s Broadchurch, comes as a significant reworking of the masculinist portrayal of previous doctors.
About time, too.
Doctor Who’s new head writer and executive producer, Chris Chibnall, said: ‘I always knew I wanted the 13th Doctor to be a woman and we’re thrilled to have secured our number one choice. Her audition for the Doctor simply blew us all away.
‘Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role. The 13th Doctor is on her way.’
But how is the Twitterverse reacting to the news?
Some people think the show will suffer, illustrating that misogynistic attitudes towards women are still very much alive and kicking…
