One heartbroken wife, one explosive letter, and one disgraced 'feminist'

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday, screen sci-fi giant Joss Whedon was one of TV’s most feminist allies, and today he’s been outed as an alleged cheat who toyed with his wife for years. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator’s ex-wife, Kai Cole, has penned an explosive and heart wrenching blog post for The Wrap, in which she claims Whedon had numerous affairs during their marriage, and left her suffering with complex PTSD. In cult sci-fi circles, Whedon is the legend of all legends. Go to any comic book store and you’re likely to see at least one person sporting a ‘Whedon is King’ T-shirt. Not only has he been the brains behind epic shows like Buffy and Firefly, as well as blockbusters like The Avengers and Toy Story, but he has also been awarded and revered for his feminist work and championing of women in Hollywood. But it looks like the king of male-influenced gender equality may be dethroned after the revelations from his ex-wife. The pair met in 1991, on the eve of Whedon’s unrivalled career, and married four years later.

Cole claims she was the one who convinced him to turn the unsuccessful Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie into a TV series. Unaware of how popular the show would be, Whedon would go on to have numerous affairs and lie about his infidelity until the end of their marriage, according to Cole.

She wrote in the blog post: ‘Fifteen years later, when he was done with our marriage and finally ready to tell the truth, he wrote me, “When I was running ‘Buffy,’ I was surrounded by beautiful, needy, aggressive young women. It felt like I had a disease, like something from a Greek myth. Suddenly I am a powerful producer and the world is laid out at my feet and I can’t touch it.” ‘Joss admitted that for the next decade and a half, he hid multiple affairs and a number of inappropriate emotional ones that he had with his actresses, co-workers, fans and friends, while he stayed married to me... Despite understanding, on some level, that what he was doing was wrong, he never conceded the hypocrisy of being out in the world preaching feminist ideals, while at the same time, taking away my right to make choices for my life and my body based on the truth. I believed, everyone believed, that he was one of the good guys, committed to fighting for women’s rights, committed to our marriage, and to the women he worked with. But I now see how he used his relationship with me as a shield, both during and after our marriage, so no one would question his relationships with other women or scrutinize his writing as anything other than feminist.’ Cole also says that once the truth came to light, she felt ‘broken’ and was eventually diagnosed with PTSD, which she has struggled to overcome for the past five years. Writing for The Wrap seems to have been some sort of closure for Cole; letting the world know that her ex-husband isn’t all he appears to be. ‘I want to let women know that he is not who he pretends to be,’ she concluded. ‘I want the people who worship him to know he is human, and the organizations giving him awards for his feminist work, to think twice in the future about honoring a man who does not practice what he preaches.’ A spokesperson for Joss Whedon told The Wrap: ‘While this account includes inaccuracies and misrepresentations which can be harmful to their family, Joss is not commenting, out of concern for his children and out of respect for his ex-wife.’

Naturally, Whedon fans are having a hard time coping with the fact that their hero might be an unfaithful womaniser:
