The game is being developed by Relic Entertainment and has yet to be given a release date
Age of Empires is probably the most famous strategy game in gaming history. The first title of the series was released in 1997 for PC. It was such a massive success that it spawned a trilogy which kept gamers glued to their monitors until 2005.
It's been 12 years since part three of the saga was released, and many gamers were starting to believe a fourth installment would never come. But – to the surprise and delight of fans – Microsoft Studios dropped a bombshell announcement at Gamescom 2017: Age of Empires IV was in development.
During the Microsoft conference, the publisher unveiled a spectacular trailer that takes us on a journey through the history of warfare. Attendees were treated to a rollercoaster ride through some of humankind's most militaristic episodes, from Imperial Rome to feudal Japan.
There is no word on when we can expect Age of Empires IV to be released – and we've yet to see a gameplay demonstration. However, we do know that Relic Entertainment – developers of successful titles such as Dawn of War and Company of Heroes – will be taking over from the now defunct Ensemble Studios, the game's original developers.
Microsoft also announced the release of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series. Two long-awaited announcements that place Bill Gates's company among the most talked-about at this year's Gamescom.
