The tragic end to a bodybuilding tournament
South African bodybuilder Sifiso Lungelo Thabete died on Friday after breaking his neck during a competition in his hometown of Emlazi. Thabete wanted to entertain the crowd and impress the judges with a backflip that ended up costing him his life.
The 23-year-old competitor ran to the middle of the mat and attempted a backflip. Unfortunately, his body didn't gain enough momentum to rotate and Thabete landed on the back of his head, breaking his neck.
Emergency services were quick to arrive on the scene but Thabete died from his injuries soon after.
The footage, filmed by a spectator, captures the horrifying incident. Thabete can be seen attempting the backflip, landing on his head and falling to the ground. He then remains motionless on the mat while the public look on in dismay.
Thabete was an International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) junior world champion in the up to 75kg category.
