The human body's most incredible organ?
In January, Australian artist Alli Sebastian Wolf accompanied the music of Amanda Palmer on the Sydney Opera House stage in order to give a class on the human body's most marvellous organ: the clitoris.
Here are 9 things you didn't know about the clitoris (that will make you love it even more).
1. The clitoris is like an iceberg
We only see the tip, but there's much more inside: it surrounds the vaginal canal and extends towards the thighs. 'The part we see and feel is the little gland that creates the head of the clitoris', says Wolf. 'From there, all the magic happens below the surface.'
2. There are 8,000 nerve endings in the tip of the clitoris alone, double the amount in a penis
A clitoris is formed of 18 different parts, a mix of erectile tissue, muscle and nerves. 'All of these little pieces work together in order to create the incredible sensations that a person with a clitoris feels when they orgasm.'
In fact, the vagina itself has very little sensitivity. 'Giving birth through something as sensitive as a clitoris would be extremely painful', says Wolf.
3. It can grow up to 300%
The clitoris is between 7 and 12cm long and can swell from 50 to 300% when stimulated. It's not a case of 'zero to a hundred' says Wolf, but when you approach orgasm, it increases in size.
When relaxed, the 'arms' of the clitoris extend towards the thighs, but, when stimulated, they curve and 'give your inner body a little hug.'
4. G-spot orgasms achieved by penetration are also clitoral
Big surprise: these orgasms are also achieved by stimulating internal parts of the clitoris. 'You can orgasm from stimulation of different areas, but all of those are using the clitoris in different ways', explains Wolf.
5. It's the only body part with the sole purpose of giving pleasure
Even so, 1 out of every 10 women have never experienced an orgasm. Wolf blames the 'shame culture' surrounding feminine sexuality, which has suppresses scientific investigation as well as our own personal exploration.
6. But the clitoris hasn't always given us good times
Throughout history, there have been doctors who have recommended its extraction (yes, we're talking about female genital mutilation) in order to cure mental illness such as depression or schizophrenia.
7. The clitoris can form part of a penis (and vice versa)
In some gender reassignment surgeries, the clitoris can grow in size with hormones in order to form a penis. In other cases, the glans penis can be reduced and relocated to create a clitoris.
8. It's the only body part that never grows old
The clitoris of an 80-year-old woman works just as well as that of a woman in her twenties. It does, however, continue to grow, so that when we reach old age, it will be 2.5 times bigger than it was when we were at secondary school.
9. Each one is unique
The clitoris comes in an infinity of shapes and colours, from light pink to black. According to Wolf, they're 'as varied as our faces.'
