Doctors filmed the operation and explained how they managed to save her life.
Virginia Patricia Gallardo Díaz from Peru has survived after falling from her balcony while attempting to prevent her granddaughter from doing the same. Both fell, but the woman ended up being impaled by an iron pole. The girl suffered no major injuries.
The pole entered through the left side of Díaz’s neck, just millimetres away from her aortic artery, and reached her lung. The woman reached the hospital in a state of shock as a result of the trauma.
Surgeon Carlos Zapatel described the state Diaz was in when she arrived to the hospital: ‘The left brachial plexus nerve and part of the left subclavian artery were injured, but the lower lobe of the lung and the aortic artery were saved by just a few millimetres. The iron pole ran parallel to the aorta.’
The life-or-death operation lasted several hours, but, in the end, it was successful. The heroic Peruvian grandmother is breathing, walking, and well on the road to recovery.
