Mary Tsoni, star of Dogtooth (2009), was found dead in her Athens apartment on Monday. A cause of death has not yet been reported, but The Hollywood Reporter is linking her death to a bout of severe depression that the actress had been suffering from for several months.
According to Greek newspaper Espresso, Tsoni called emergency services and asked for an ambulance to come to her apartment. But by the time the medics arrived, she was already dead.
One of the first people to find Tsoni's body was Lewsha Camille Simborua, a fellow actress and close friend. She wrote a Facebook post expressing her shock and sadness:
Tsoni had a comparatively short acting career behind her, but was already considered a rising star of indie cinema. She debuted in 2005 with To Kako (Evil) by Yorgos Naussias, and later starred in Die Nordend Strasse (The Northern Street). But it was her performance in the Oscar-nominated Dogtooth by Yorgos Lanthimos that shot her to fame.
