Critics say the photo for Vanity Fair goes against the feminism that Watson defends.

Emma Watson is the cover star of the next issue of Vanity Fair. In one of the photos accompanying the feature, which is about Watson's 'metamorphosis from child star to leading woman', she is shown without a bra.

Some fans and commentators quickly took to social media to accuse the actress of being a 'hypocrite'.

It looks like there are still plenty of people out there who still don't know what being a feminist means.

Her critics say that the actress – a self-declared feminist who defends the rights of women in her post as UN ambassador – is promoting a image that contradicts the values she supposedly defends.

It all kicked off with this tweet by radio presenter Julia Hartley-Brewer suggesting that it would be hard for people to take Watson seriously as a feminist after seeing the photo.

Others were quick to jump on the Emma-bashing bandwagon...

However, other tweeters came out in defense of the Harry Potter star.

One user turned the tables on critics by saying that their attitude to the photo proved exactly why feminism was still so important.
