The suspect detonated the explosives in the doorway of the cathedral

Egypt's Interior Ministry has released images from one of the two terrorist attacks that shook the country on Sunday, killing 44 and injuring over 100. The video shows the moment a suicide bomber detonated explosives outside Saint Mark's Coptic Cathedral in Alexandria.

The cathedral's security footage shows an armed man attempting to enter the building. He is then told by security guards to go through the metal detector, at which point he sets off the explosives. The attack left 18 dead and more than 35 injured, according to the Egyptian Health Ministry.

Just three hours earlier, a bomb had gone off in St George's Church in the Nile Delta city of Tanta, killing at least 29 and wounding 71. Islamic State has claimed responsibility for both attacks, which coincided with the start of Holy Week.

The president of Egypt, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, has declared a state of emergency for three months.

This latest incidence of jihadist terror has come just days after Pope Francis paid a visit to Egypt. Coptic Christians make up 10% of the population of the mostly-Muslim nation, and they are one of the oldest Christian communities in the world.
