The actor also opened up about his inclusion in meme culture.
Many of the mysteries behind the almighty cock-up that took place during this year's Oscars have finally been revealed. We now know whose fault it was, and we've enjoyed seeing the actors' reactions, but there's one thing we hadn't been able to figure out until now: Ryan Gosling's somewhat inappropriate giggling fit.
In the midst of the dramatic scene, with most of the actors, producers and directors displaying shock, disappointment or disbelief, the star of La La Land chuckled to himself near the edge of the stage. With his arms crossed and his hand covering his mouth, Gosling's attitude appeared to be one of cynical amusement.
But at the Adobe Summit in Las Vegas last Wednesday, the Drive star revealed that he simply felt relieved:
Far from being a sore loser, Gosling was simply happy that the situation wasn't as bad as he'd feared. In fact, during the interview, he went on to congratulate Moonlight:
'Truthfully, I was also so thrilled that Moonlight won. I know the director… I’ve worked with them before. It’s such a groundbreaking film, made for a million dollars, an incredible achievement and I’m so happy for them that they were being recognised.'
Finally, the actor was asked about his presence in meme culture, specifically the 'Ryan Gosling Won't Eat His Cereal' video series that went viral on Vine.
'I think what is happening with the cereal one, which is interesting, is that made me aware of the potential power of them,' the actor said. 'There was a kid named Ryan McHenry, who I think was Scottish, and was high and watching the film Drive with cereal and thought it was really funny to try and make it look like I wouldn’t eat my cereal.'
When McHenry died of cancer, Gosling decided to make a small tribute video of himself finally eating his cereal:'The only thing I could think to do was to eat my cereal. So I just filmed a little Vine of me doing that … and it felt full circle and closed,' he added.
