WHAT. THE. FUCK
The bizarre ‘sea monster’ was discovered on Muriwai Beach near Auckland in New Zealand.
Beach goer Melissa Doubleday spotted the weird-looking object. She quickly took photos of her find and posted them to a local Facebook group asking, ‘Just curious to know if anyone knows what this is?’
Her post attracted large numbers of visitors who came to the beach to take their own snapshots of the thing, which has been nicknamed the ‘Muriwai Monster’. At first, nobody could clear up the mystery behind this perplexing find.
But that was until the New Zealand Marine Sciences Society examined the images and concluded that the object was probably a huge piece of driftwood covered in gooseneck barnacles. According to the Australian Museum, these crustaceans can frequently be found clinging to underwater debris, piers, and jetties. In Spain and Portugal gooseneck barnacles are considered a delicacy. They can cost over $100 dollars in some restaurants.
