Fox frozen stiff inside a block of ice.
On 2 January, Franz Stehle, a German hunter, found the body of a red fox trapped inside a block of ice in the Danube.
Stehle put the animal on display outside his family’s hotel in Fridingen to warn people of the dangers of walking on the icy river.
Stehle explained that it’s relatively common for thin ice to break under an animal’s paws, plunging the creature into freezing waters. Previously he’d found a deer and a boar in the same ice-cube state. Last year, a photo of a pair of moose trapped in Alaskan ice also went viral.
But it’s not just the wild animals that are suffering from the icy conditions sweeping Europe: over 60 people have already died this year. Those most at risk are refugees, the elderly, and homeless people in rural areas.
