Which city has the biggest coke habit in Europe? The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) has found the answer to that very question by analysing wastewater from 50 cities in 18 countries across Europe.
Researchers from the EMCDDA collected data throughout March 2016. They took samples from weekdays (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) and the weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday). And the winning cities were...For the first time in three years, London was knocked off the podium as Europe’s number one cokehead. From 2013 until 2016, the UK city was the continent’s cocaine capital. But now, Antwerp has taken its place. This Belgian port city was found to consume an average of 914.8mg a day per 1,000 residents. The UK capital came a close second with an average of 894.9mg for every 1,000 Londoners. Zurich was in third place with a daily average of 722mg for every 1,000 citizens.
Although London came second to Antwerp in overall average consumption, it beat all contenders in terms of days of use per week. According to figures derived from the analysis of wastewater, Londoners take an average of 790.5mg per 1,000 people throughout the whole week.
‘Traces of cocaine in wastewater indicate that cocaine use is highest in western European cities, in particular in cities in Belgium, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, and in some southern cities,’ the EMCDDA reported. ‘The analysis indicates that cocaine use is very low to negligible in the majority of eastern European states.’
