The pharma bro's life is going from bad to worseJust when you thought things couldn’t get any worse for Martin Shkreli, they just did. He is going to jail, effective immediately.
The former pharmaceuticals company CEO - who has been dubbed the ‘world’s most hated man’ - had his bail revoked after he offered $5,000 to anyone who would steal a strand of Hillary Clinton’s hair.Judge Kiyo Matsumoto said in Brooklyn federal court on Wednesday that Shkreli ‘demonstrated that he has posed a real danger’ for offering to pay a bounty for a lock of the former presidential candidate’s hair. Matsumoto concluded that the appeal for Clinton’s hair, which was shared on Facebook, was a ‘solicitation of an assault’, and that he was not protected by the first amendment because there was ‘a risk someone may take’ Shkreli up on his offer. The so-called ‘pharma bro’ was previously on a $5 million bail while he awaits sentencing after being convicted of two counts of fraud, and one count of conspiracy, for misleading investors in his hedge funds. The maximum prison term is 20 years in prison.
Shkreli acquired his title as the ‘most hated man in the world’ for famously hiking the price of a life-saving HIV and cancer drug from $13.50 a pill to $700 per pill.
